Five Apps, Six Rounds, No Participation Trophies
Short-drama apps stopped being a niche curiosity some time ago. In Q1 2025, the US generated 49% of the about $700M in global in-app revenue that Sensor Tower recorded for the category. As of Q1 2026 the quarterly figure stood at about $750M, and full-year 2025 landed at roughly $2.8–3B. Anyone who has searched a store for a short reels app has come across at least one of the five names that dominate the conversation: ReelShort, DramaBox, ShortMax, My Drama and DramaWave. On the surface, https://www.reelshorts.org/where-to-watch/my-husband-pretended-to-be-poor/ the apps look identical, with vertical episodes, a cliffhanger every minute or two and a weekly pass waiting behind the paywall. The differences lie underneath, in ownership, pricing, platforms and extras, and they shape what you pay and where you can watch. We put them through six rounds and named a winner in each, relying on only store listings, company terms and published industry data as of September 2026.
The Big Head-to-Head Grid
Before the rounds get underway, here is the entire field on one screen. Prices track the US App Store as of September 2026, and they change by country, platform and promotion. We pulled install counts from each app’s Google Play listing. The market shares come from Media Partners Asia estimates for the microdrama market outside China. Where a cell says “not reported”, no reliable source released the figure, and we would sooner leave a gap than guess. The grid works as the scoreboard, and the rounds below are the commentary.

Round 1: Owners and Scale
Being the incumbent, ReelShort still holds the most weight. In August 2022, Crazy Maple Studio, based in Sunnyvale and backed by China’s COL Group, released it, and MPA assigns it about 29% of the market outside China. MPA also puts 2025 revenue for the app at $785M and forecasts $1.05B for 2026. DramaBox, run by Singapore’s StoryMatrix as a subsidiary of Beijing Dianzhong Technology, launched in April 2023 and has about 21%. In Q1 2025, ReelShort was ahead $130M to $120M by Sensor Tower’s count, but by Q1 2026 the two were tied at roughly $140M each, with DramaBox ranked first. DramaWave, often mistyped as “dreamwave”, is the youngest app here, yet it already has about 13% and its annualized revenue reportedly passed $700M by Q2 2026. My Drama is the minnow, with 5M+ Android installs, but it is the only one with Fox Entertainment as a shareholder. Operating from Hong Kong, ShortMax seems to be the same app as ShortTV from Jiuzhou Culture. For context, GoodShort has about 6% and sits just outside this group. Winner: ReelShort, narrowly, on market share.
Round 2: Cost
This is the round where the apps seem most alike. A weekly pass at about $19.99 is offered by ReelShort, ShortMax, My Drama and DramaWave in the US App Store, and each one renews automatically. Beyond that, ShortMax lists a $9.99 “Weekly Pass Pro”, and DramaWave’s weekly VIP begins at $7.99. DramaBox goes a different route, with auto-renewing memberships at $5.99, $17.99 and $19.99 plus special offers from $4.99. DramaWave’s monthly VIP at $36.99 is the standout, as it is the only verified monthly plan in these US listings. Four weeks of a $19.99 weekly pass cost about $80, meaning a monthly plan at less than half that is the smarter buy for steady viewers. Prices differ by country, platform and promotion, so the number on your screen may differ. Winner: DramaWave, as its monthly plan undercuts four weekly renewals comfortably.
Round 3: Watching for Free
The marketing gets loud and the details get thin around free viewing. ReelShort’s own blog notes that one rewarded ad unlocks two premium episodes and that the first 5 to 15 episodes of a series are usually free. Paid coins do not expire, but free reward coins usually do, and a seven-day check-in streak earns 100+ of them. ReelShort also operates official channels on YouTube, TikTok and Dailymotion, which are the easiest legitimate way to sample a reel short drama without paying. Steer clear of look-alike sites, modded APKs and “unlimited coins” generators, which are unofficial and never a safe shortcut. DramaBox has free options too, but its exact numbers for free episodes, ad caps and check-in coins show up only in third-party guides. Winner: ReelShort, and clearly so.
Round 4: Where You Can Watch
Screens are where these apps truly diverge. iPhone, iPad, Apple silicon Macs, Vision Pro and Android are all covered by ReelShort, which also streams in a browser at reelshort.com with progress that syncs across devices. Since its domain redirects to the ShortTV website, ShortMax offers web browsing too. DramaWave’s verified presence is its iOS and Android apps, and DramaBox’s website mostly sends you back to the app. The trump card belongs to My Drama, with an Apple TV app for tvOS 18 or later, something ReelShort’s App Store listing does not show. Want nothing more than a shorts app on your phone? Any of the five will do. Winner: ReelShort overall, while My Drama takes the living room.
Round 5: Catalog and Originals
No rival touches ShortMax on raw numbers. As of January 2024 the company behind ShortTV had produced more than 600 mini-dramas for overseas markets, most of them dubbed Chinese adaptations, and the app now claims 50,000+ dramas in 19 languages. DramaWave says it has 30,000+ dramas in 18 languages, and according to reports, more than 80% of its newly released content is AI-generated. ReelShort wins on recognizable hits, including The Double Life of My Billionaire Husband and Fated to My Forbidden Alpha, both of which went viral in November 2023. An LA production team and originals such as Fake Dating My Rich Nemesis are DramaBox’s answer. My Drama boasts the most interesting pipeline, since Fox has committed to 200+ vertical titles over two years. Winner: ShortMax, on sheer volume.

Round 6: Perks and Fine Print
DramaWave comfortably takes this round. Its App Store listing advertises offline downloads, on-screen comments and 1080p video, and no other app in this comparison is verified to offer offline viewing. Anyone who switches between phone and laptop will find ReelShort’s cross-device sync the next most useful perk. The fine print merits a look too, since it varies more than the prices do. On any of these apps, cancel in App Store or Google Play settings rather than deleting it, since deleting the app does not cancel your subscription. ShortMax’s terms state that refunds are not given “unless the paid product/service is unusable”; My Drama, for its part, forfeits coins after 12 months of inactivity. Winner: DramaWave.
Best For: The Final Verdict
No single short drama app wins every round, which means the best choice depends on how you watch. Being the one app here with a verified tvOS version, and the only one with Fox-produced originals, My Drama is best for Apple TV. ReelShort is best for web viewing, thanks to a full browser player and progress that travels with you between devices. Pairing offline downloads with a $36.99 monthly plan, DramaWave is best for commuters and steady bingers. For sheer volume, ShortMax is best, with claimed 50,000+ dramas that dwarf everything else in the grid. DramaBox is best for backing the current revenue leader, as it was ranked first by Sensor Tower in Q1 2026 and picked for Disney’s 2025 Accelerator class. ReelShort is once again best for free, legitimate sampling, with its ad unlocks, check-in coins and official social channels. If all five tempt you, pick one, cancel the weekly pass you are not using and let the cliffhangers wait a day.
